As a photographer based in Fernie BC I have had the fortune to learn and grow in a beautiful corner of the world. My profession as a photographer is rooted in my passion for outdoor adventure and adrenaline pumping sports. I really get a kick out of capturing that intense or insane moment when for that second in time my subject is at the edge or falling off it. Whether it is dropping a waterfall in a kayak or stomping a pillow on a juicy ski line, I love freezing the action with my camera.
Timing is a big part of catching those moments, but even more important is the art of being creative in telling the story behind the image. I like to approach my photography missions in this way. I suppose this approach comes from my work contracts which require me to document the unique experiences of my clients. In the winter I work in the mountains at a cat skiing operation in the Monashees, on my skis and in the summer I float alongside rafts in my kayak, on the elk river in Fernie, taking photos of the clients from the Canyon Raft Company.
In sport action photos, I think it’s important to capture in a way that makes the viewer wonder or imagine what happened before and after that second in time. In this way the picture tells a story and immortalizes those incredible experiences that enrich your life. I like to carry this concept in all genres of photography, still life, portraits, weddings or events that I may have the privilege to shoot.
